I have been fortunate to undertake some adventurous trips and then write about them.
First Sir Stirling Moss, who besides being a great racing driver, was a top-flight rally driver. He rallied in the UK, Europe, Africa, the USA, even to lovely Tasmania. Having visited Tassy I can highly recommend a visit if you get a chance.
My book Stirling Moss – Rally Driver has details of all the rallies he did, the various cars he drove, his team-mates, and the results. There are lots of images and my book covers his fantastic win of the infamous Mille Miglia, and how it led to the development of rally pace-notes. More details here.
With a daughter living in Sydney, my wife and I spent nearly a year travelling around Australia with an off-road motorhome (Matilda). We had all sorts of adventures driving the remote desert tracks, seeing all the amazing animals and birds, meeting Outback characters, and enjoyed true Aussie hospitality.
Needless to say, there were loads of adventures and I record them in my book Waltzing Matilda Around Australia. They include feeding dolphins, an unexpected flight over Lake Eyre, snakes, a stay in hospital, three murders, even a new baby. Find out more here.
The chance to take part in an endurance rally around South America could not be missed and in A High in the Andes I tell the story of the 26,000 kms rally through seven countries. The trip, over several weeks, took us from Rio de Janeiro across Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia to Lima in Peru. The route then took us south eventually through Chile to Ushuaia the southern most town on the planet. Next, we headed back through Argentine, Uruguay and the finish in Rio.
The 100 teams taking part drove through the Andes, Atacama Desert, Patagonia, and remote Tierra del Fuego. There were problems, crashes, mechanical problems and more, but also magnificent scenery. The people were keen to see us, and at the end I was invited to help with announcements at the prize-giving ceremony on the Sugarloaf Mountain. See more about the illustrated book here.
